The new handgun release cycle from late 2025 through early 2026 was active but not feverish like previous years; however, there were some standout introductions that gained a lot of attention. Clear trends are offering unique models addressing entry-level price points, feature-loaded models, and slim/micro-compact offerings. Other consumer-driven trends are modular fire-control systems for a more adaptable platform, factory-compensated carry guns, nearly every gun is now optics-ready, and duty-ready super-slim micro-compacts.

Many big names jumped into the highly competitive 9mm compact-sized firearms market, such as Ruger, Taurus and FN. The Ruger RXM, a feature-loaded G19 Gen 3 clone, is an affordable collaboration with Magpul’s lower grip housings, magazines and more. Ruger is already expanding the RXM line to include full-sized models, compact models with 17-round capacity, and also threaded-barrel models. Consumers are looking forward to the fast evolution of the RXM platform.

Taurus’ new TX9 Compact, Sub-Compact and Full-Sized duty-ready 9mms are delivering an aggressively featured and priced optics-ready, FCU-based platform with a lot of features.

FN is not known for producing inexpensive guns; however, their new FN 309 MRD is just that: an affordable, optics-ready, compact 9mm at an entry-level price point. Focused on the newer shooter, it features a 25% lower charging effort thanks to the internal-hammer-operated design, plus other thoughtful design features for new shooters like reduced magazine spring force for easier reload effort.

Springfield’s continued to evolve the heavily touted Echelon, introducing the new 4.0C Comp, delivering an integrally compensated barrel tuned for reliable defensive use. The Echelon C is sized to compete in the compact, micro-duty, and slim micro-compact markets. The Springfield Echelon, like the Canik MC9 Prime, sits in a new micro-duty pistol size class that is thinner than legacy-sized compact pistols with full capacity.

The Canik MC9 Prime M04 offers impressive competition-leaning specs for a duty-grade, made-in-the-USA firearm. The MC9 Prime includes a noticeably slimmer profile with aggressive grip and a 17+1 capacity. It’s integrally compensated and optics are included, as are a very upscale complete case and owners kit that all up the competitive value.

Sig Sauer’s P365 AXG Legion expanded capacity with an upscale G10 grip and alloy frame dual-port compensated model. Though a premium build, the AXG is focused on compact duty carry to give LEO and military a fast and accurate defensive platform.

FN, S&W and Springfield are having a three-way war with optics-ready, 1-inch-width, super-slim micro-compacts that disappear in the waistline. FN’s Reflex line evolved with the slim full 15+1 capacity optics-ready Reflex MRD XL. The Reflex XL includes a full-sized overall gun feel and outstanding hammer-fired trigger that delivers all-day range comfort.

S&W continues to expand the Shield line with the X Carry Comp from its custom shop delivering 13/15-round capacity in an optics-ready, compensated 9mm platform.

Springfield expanded with the Hellcat 3” Micro-Compact OSP in a 380 ACP 13-round model focusing on light racking operation and class-leading 380 ACP capacity.

S&W did not forget about the 10mm shooter and released the Smith & Wesson M&P 10mm Carry Comp, delivering recoil reduction for the 10mm powerhouse. Below are highlighted handgun releases introduced from late 2025 through SHOT Show 2026, and a few we have ongoing testing with.

FN Reflex XL MRD

Ultra-slim full-capacity micro-compact. FN expanded its Reflex line with a larger carry variant addressing shootability and capacity demands.

●      Internal hammer-fired micro-compact system with exceptional trigger

●      Editor Testing Notes: The slim profile disappears but still delivers full compact size capacity and feel. Extreme accuracy and reliability with exceptional natural point-shooting ergonomics and a trigger feel that only the hammer-fired design can deliver. This has become my new CCW gun, displacing my Glock 19 and G26 carry options.

FN 309 MRD

Affordable optics-ready compact. FN’s 2026 launch of the FN 309 MRD represents a major strategic shift — bringing FN reliability and ergonomics into a more affordable, optics-ready everyday carry platform designed for broad commercial appeal.

With faster/gassier ammo, the compensator delivers faster split times without the ammo-picky nature of a high-output compensator. Fast, accurate and one of the most flexible optics mounting systems in the industry.
