As the American-Israeli war on Iran entered its second day Sunday, Iranian missiles and drones struck targets across the Persian Gulf, hitting U.S. installations and energy infrastructure in allied Gulf states, while Israel continued air operations over Iranian airspace amid reports of heavy losses to the Islamic Republic’s senior leadership. The U.S. and Israel attacked Iran Saturday morning. Iranian state media reported strikes on Tehran, the capital, and broadcast footage of smoke rising after bombings. President Donald Trump, in a video message posted on Truth Social, announced “major combat operations in Iran” and called on the Iranian people to overthrow their government. Three U.S. service members have been killed in action as part of ongoing combat operations against Iran, U.S. Central Command announced in a post on X Sunday morning. The Iranian state broadcaster IRIB and other state media confirmed the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei early Sunday morning, Tehran time. The report followed Saturday’s American and Israeli announcements of the ayatollah’s death in an early strike on the Iranian capital. Several of Khamenei’s family members also died in the strike. The succession plans for the Islamic Republic’s chief cleric remain unclear as the joint American-Israeli campaign enters its second day.
